Prime Minister urges US Ambassador to investigate staff activities over misleading information

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has called on the US Ambassador to Georgia, Robin Dunnigan, to closely examine the actions of her embassy staff following recent statements posted by the US Embassy on its Facebook page. Kobakhidze expressed concern that these statements contained inaccurate information and serious accusations against the Georgian government.

Kobakhidze referred to a particular issue involving the US-funded NGO, ISFED, which accused the ruling party, “Georgian Dream,” of falsifying 46,000 votes during the election process. While the US Embassy downplayed this as a “minor flaw,” the Prime Minister stressed that it was a serious accusation that had significant consequences, fueling opposition attempts to challenge the government.

“The error between Pivot and the Central Election Commission (CEC) was 2.4%, not 1.8% as the embassy claimed,” Kobakhidze said. He added that the ISFED accusation of electoral fraud had provided the opposition with grounds to attempt to undermine the government, which the embassy described as a minor error.

Kobakhidze also mentioned his intention to discuss these concerns directly with the US ambassador, as the country heads into the next phase of the election process.
