“We strictly condemned so-called presidential elections in the occupied region of Abkhazia and the opening of so-called polling stations on the territory of the Russian Federation. It is alarming that the vast majority of European states fail to condemn holding these so-called elections,” stated Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Relations, at a joint OSCE committee session.
According to Samkharadze, these so-called elections in Abkhazia constitute a blatant violation of international law and another attempt to undermine Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“First and foremost, I would like to bring to attention the most painful and deeply concerning development affecting the Georgian nation.
This is the ongoing illegal occupation of Georgian regions, Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, and the recent events that have further aggravated the situation on the ground. So-called presidential elections were held last Saturday in Russian occupied region of Abkhazia. Furthermore, two polling stations were opened for these sham elections in Moscow and Cherkassk, so on the territory of the Russian Federation. We strictly condemned so-called presidential elections in the occupied region of Abkhazia and the opening of so-called polling stations on the territory of the Russian Federation. This represents a flagrant breach of international law and yet another attempt to violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
Let me underline that until the restoration of Georgia’s jurisdiction over the occupied territories, all activities and legislative acts by the de facto authorities are declared null and void. It is alarming that the vast majority of European states fail to condemn holding these so-called elections. The shortcomings in addressing the occupation of Georgia’s territories within the broader context of European security evoke a feeling that ensuring stability, peaceful coexistence, respect for the national sovereignty and determination of ongoing occupation are beyond the capabilities of this and other international organizations,” Samkharadze stated.
