Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has welcomed the creation of a new opposition alliance, calling it an important step toward unity.
“Today, a large part of the Georgian opposition has taken an important step toward unity by forming an opposition alliance. This is what I have always called for, and that is why I say it is better late than never,” Saakashvili wrote.
He noted that he had been personally involved in the process, working with leaders of various parties to advance the initiative.
“I, along with others, have been involved in this process and have been working all this time with the leaders of various parties to move this issue forward. We may have had disagreements in the past, and some of us may not particularly like each other even now, but all of this is insignificant compared to the major historical process unfolding around us.
With this first important step, we are responding to the demand of the Georgian people and our supporters in the democratic world to follow the path of unity. Today, that unity has been declared. It must now be followed by decisive joint action to liberate our homeland and each of its citizens. Many thanks to everyone who chose unity and did not give in to the temptation of isolation and internal division. We will definitely win. There is strength in unity,” Saakashvili wrote.
The statement follows a meeting of nine opposition parties, after which Nika Gvaramia announced that an opposition alliance had been formed, saying, “We are creating unity to win together.”
