Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Monday said the Head of the OSCE Observation Mission, Pascal Alizard wrote to Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili about future cooperation following the first session of the new parliamentary convocation.
According to the PM, “It is critically important that the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and OSCE Observation Mission properly assess and recognize these elections.”
“OSCE/ODIHR is a particular target of opposition attacks, which began even before the elections and continue afterwards. The main reason is that OSCE/ODIHR, the primary observation mission monitoring our parliamentary elections, assessed these elections as competitive.
Against the backdrop of these attacks, it is especially gratifying that today the OSCE Observation Mission Head, Pascal Alizard, wrote to Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili about future cooperation following the first session of the new parliament.
The proper evaluation and recognition of these elections by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and Observation Mission is indeed very important. The letter emphasizes that the elections offered citizens a broad choice, were well-administered, and candidates had the freedom to conduct campaigns. It was again underscored that elections were held under competitive conditions.
The letter also mentions certain critical observations, including issues related to voter pressure, financial inequality, and inadequate women’s representation in party lists.
The main opposition’s primary theme—the so-called ‘leak’ issue—is not mentioned in the letter, given that it was not actually relevant. This letter is further proof that the elections are recognized, were conducted properly, and all speculation is baseless.
I want to thank the entire OSCE/ODIHR, OSCE Observation Mission, and OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Mission for their observation and objective assessment of the elections,” the Prime Minister noted.
