“Today is a historic day for Georgian sports. The lighting of the Olympic Flame of Peace in Bakuriani once again confirms that all 45 European countries share a common goal – to live in a healthy, united and peaceful Europe,” the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the European Winter Youth Olympic Festival.
According to the PM, Georgia has fulfilled its promise and established itself on the world map as an attractive destination for winter sports. Here is his speech as delivered:
„Let me greet and welcome Mr. Spyros Capralos, President of the European Olympic Committees; Mr. Mikheil Kavelashvili, President of Georgia; leadership of the National Olympic Committee of Georgia; members of the government and parliament of Georgia; athletes, fans and guests of our country!
Today is a historic day for Georgian sports. The lighting of the Olympic Flame of Peace in Bakuriani once again confirms that all 45 [forty five] European countries share a common goal – to live in a healthy, united and peaceful Europe.
Georgia has fulfilled its promise and established itself on the world map as an attractive destination for winter sports. The festival, bringing together nearly 1000 [one thousand] athletes and over 700 [seven hundred] officials from 45 [forty five] countries, is clear proof of this. With this achievement, we have joined the select group of 7 [seven] European countries that have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympic Festivals.
Leaving a lasting legacy for the country through the festival is the vision of the European Olympic Committees, which aligns perfectly with our own. That is why the festival is being held in three locations – Bakuriani, Batumi and Tbilisi. Notably, Batumi and Tbilisi are hosting such a major competition for the first time, presenting themselves to the world in a new and exciting way.
Moreover, this is not the only event taking place in Georgia this winter. Several world-class tournaments are also scheduled this month at our other resorts—Gudauri and Mestia.
We extend our gratitude to all participating countries, delegates and mission leaders for their trust in us. We have done everything possible to create the best conditions for them—from top-tier sports infrastructure to comfortable hotels.
To ensure the highest standards, the government has gradually allocated hundreds of millions of GEL. This investment is aimed at long-term goals: developing sports infrastructure, promoting a healthy lifestyle among the younger generation and fostering a strong winter sports culture.
Notably, Tbilisi’s new ice rink of international standards, the biathlon stadium equipped with one of the world’s best shooting systems and Batumi’s Ice Palace fully meet the highest international standards.
Bakuriani 2025 is also innovative – for the first time in the festival’s history, artificial intelligence will be utilized. Additionally, it sets an environmental example – in the Golden Forest, trees will be planted in honor of each gold medalist.
I am confident that the festival will bring even greater recognition to our country and open new opportunities for future generations.
Once again, I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this success. I wish every athlete great achievements and every fan an unforgettable sporting spectacle,” the Prime Minister stated.
