Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze expressed condolences over the death of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II.
According to the PM’s condolence statement, Ilia II’s passing away marked the end of a great era in the history of the Mother Church and the Georgian state.
The PM viewed the Patriarch’s contribution to the preservation of national identity, traditions and strengthening of statehood as invaluable.
“I extend my condolences to the entire nation following the death of our spiritual leader, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude, Ilia II.
His passing away marked the end of a great era in the history of the Mother Church and the Georgian state. The period of the Patriarch’s pastoral service coincided with the most difficult turning points for our country. Throughout this historical path, he constantly remained the spiritual leader of the nation and a symbol of unity. The Patriarch, with his wisdom, love for his parioshioners, boundless patience, and ability to forgive, managed to strengthen faith in our hearts.
The merit of Ilia II goes beyond the spiritual dimension. The Patriarch’s contribution to the preservation of national identity, traditions and strengthening of statehood is invaluable. With his service to God, his homeland, and humanity, he has forever established a place among the greatest figures of our centuries-old history.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church, the Holy Synod, the parishioners, and each citizen of Georgia. It is our duty and that of future generations to nurture the invaluable legacy of our late spiritual leader.

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II passed away on March 17 at the age of 93.
