Minister of Culture Tinatin Rukhadze has inspected the ongoing restoration of the Transfiguration Dome Church and the Academy Building within the Ikalto Church Architectural Complex.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the restoration of these nationally significant cultural heritage sites is being carried out by the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Protection, with the support of the Ministry.
“At this stage, work is progressing on installing a copper roof and a belt along the slopes of the Transfiguration Church; removing subsequent layers of plaster and painted sections from the interior; and sealing, caulking, and injecting cracks. Foundation strengthening efforts have been completed; copper roofing and a belt have been installed on the dome. Regarding the academy building, vegetation has been cleared; the fence wall has been reconstructed; and loose stones have been removed. Earthworks and foundation reinforcement are currently underway near the perimeter,” the Georgian Ministry of Culture stated.
Minister Rukhadze expressed her gratitude to all those involved in the restoration efforts.
“The government and our church are working hand in hand to preserve this magnificent cultural monument. We are committed to ensuring it is never neglected,” she said.
Accompanying the Minister were Metropolitan Abba of Alaverdi, Davit (Makharadze), Deputy Mayor of Telavi Municipality Giga Mamukelashvili, and Tea Oniani, Director of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Protection.
