Nona Kurdovanidze and Maia Mtsariashvili, lawyers of Mzia Amaglobeli, founder and director of the media outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti, will appeal to the court to cancel the preventive measure, while also filing a request with the Prosecutor’s Office to close her case.
At a briefing, the lawyers stated they would submit a plea on February 13, urging the court to cancel the “cruel and unlawful preventive measure” and release Mzia Amaglobeli from unlawful imprisonment.
Nona Kurdovanidze and Maia Mtsariashvili are calling on the Prosecutor’s Office to immediately close the case, and for the Special Investigation Service to investigate the alleged ill-treatment of the journalist.
The lawyers believe that the Prosecutor’s Office should grant Mzia Amaglobeli victim status and initiate judicial procedures against Batumi police officials Irakli Dgebuadze and Grigol Beselia.
They are also urging the Prosecution to take measures against those who participated in the unlawful detention of demonstrators during the January 11-12 Batumi protests.
Mzia Amaglobeli, founder and director of the media outlets Batumelebi and Netgazeti, has been on a hunger strike for a month. The Batumi City Court ordered her imprisonment as a preventive measure on January 14, following her arrest on January 12 under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the assault of a police officer.
