GOC marks St. George Day

Georgian Orthodox Church marks Saint George Day on November 23. Festive church services will be conducted at acting churches throughout the country.

Saint George is regarded with special reverence among the Georgian people as he is believed to be the protector and patron of the nation.

In the Greek tradition, George was born to Greek Christian parents, in Cappadocia. After his father died, his mother, who was originally from Lydda, in Syria Palaestina, returned with George to her hometown. He went on to become a soldier for the Roman army, but, because of his Christian faith, he was arrested and tortured.

Saint George was executed at the age of 30 by decapitation on 23 April 303. A witness of his suffering convinced Empress Alexandra of Rome to become a Christian as well, so she joined George in martyrdom. His body was buried in Lydda, where Christians soon came to honour him as a martyr.

Georgian Orthodox Church marks St. George Day twice a year: On November 23, when he was tortured and on May 6, when he died.

Speaker: Amid foreign moralizing on corruption, questions from Ukraine’s war-torn leader are difficult to accept

“Amid moralizing from foreigners regarding corruption issues, it is increasingly challenging to hear questions from Ukraine’s war-torn leader,” wrote Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Facebook, referencing an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “I am unsure if the cargo planes mentioned in the interview are the same ones Zelenskyy sought to send to Georgia during the early days of the war, intending to deliver Georgian fighters. His loyal NGOs and the opposition loudly protested our rejection of this proposal outside the parliament. However, it is a fact that he was neither afforded the opportunity nor reprimanded for his intended use of those planes,” Papuashvili stated.

GD Political Council: No sanctions to force gov’t to drag Georgia into devastating war

“No sanctions can intimidate the Georgian people, as society well understands that no sanctions can compare to the destruction of the country. Therefore, no one can force Georgia’s government, at any cost of sanctions, to curse the country into a devastating war,” reads the statement of the Georgian Dream Political Council. The statement reads that the Georgian people will not allow the Ukrainization of Georgia at any cost of sanctions. “Georgia has so far escaped the Ukrainian scenario through great effort and uncompromising struggle, however, the fight for peace continues and this fight must be seen through to the end. As long as there is a first front in Ukraine, there will always be interest in a second front in Georgia. This is exactly what the sanctions are related to, which, dictated by the global war party and implemented by the Deep State, specific countries impose on Georgian politicians and officials. The Georgian people must fight to the end to survive and prevent the Ukrainization of Georgia. By doing this, we will also do a good service to Europe, where the majority of countries today are playing the Deep State’s game and failing to protect their own national interests. The value system of EU bureaucracy is in its worst state today, which is best expressed by five resolutions adopted by the European Parliament regarding Georgia. Through these resolutions, the European Parliament demanded the punishment of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the release of Saakashvili and other criminals, the repeal of the anti-LGBT propaganda law, etc. With the last, fifth resolution, the European Parliament demanded what no serious player had dared to demand publicly before – imposing sanctions on Russia and collapsing the Georgian economy. Given this trend, in the sixth resolution, the European Parliament will, with high probability, openly demand that we start a war with Russia. The formal basis for sanctions imposed by specific states is completely unserious, and this requires little evidence. Bidzina Ivanishvili is being sanctioned for replacing bloody authoritarianism in Georgia with democratic governance, for ending the systematic practices of torturing and killing people, extorting businesses, seizing media, and rigging elections, for increasing the country’s economy from 28 billion to 90 billion, and for bringing 12 years of uninterrupted peace to Georgia. Vakhtang Gomelauri and heroic police officers, including those who fought in the 2008 war, are being sanctioned because they effectively prevented three violent attempts to overthrow the government in the last two years and did so in such a way that not only was there no loss of life, but not even a single person’s health was affected. In contrast, we all remember the May 26 and June 20 special operations of the global war party and Deep State’s favourites, Merabishvili and Gakharia, which ended in one case with the murder of 4 people, and in the other case – with severe injuries to 7 people. Let us remind you that neither Merabishvili nor Gakharia was ever considered for sanctions because the Deep State was guided by Roosevelt’s famous quote – “He’s a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.” It’s logical that those who coddle “sons of bitches” sanction heroic police officers. We all remember that the dictator Saakashvili, who initiated the 2008 war with Russia, was crowned by the Deep State as a hero and beacon of democracy. Logically, the global war party does not spare praise for the agent of war. It is a continuation of this logic that the Deep State punishes Bidzina Ivanishvili for peace. Georgian society discerns all of this very well, and that is precisely why the Deep State’s sanctions have lost all power in Georgia. It is noteworthy that sanctions against Georgia were first imposed by the Ukrainian government, whose highest officials openly called on the Georgian government to open a second front. This was followed by sanctions from the Baltic states, which have practically completely lost their sovereignty and have to act entirely at the dictation of the Deep State. The demand and threat once voiced behind closed doors has finally taken on a public face. “Either you fight or we’ll punish you” – this is the simple message that Georgia and the Georgian people receive from the global war party. Moreover, through the opposition’s voice, they started talking about punishing the Georgian people, which is a sure sign that even more than the government, the global war party is irritated by the uncompromising position of the Georgian people, who did not allow the return to power of the collective National Movement, that is, the global war party’s agents, and Georgia’s re-involvement in war. Finally, no one can intimidate the Georgian people with any sanctions, because society well understands that no sanctions can compare to the destruction of the country. Therefore, no one can force Georgia’s government, at any cost of sanctions, to curse the country into a devastating war. The Georgian people will not allow the Ukrainization of Georgia at any cost of sanctions,” reads the GD Political Council’s statement.

Mikheil Kavelashvili: I as President will try my best to unite society with love

“We should love each other with God’s love, unite society with our love and defeat the artificially imported polarization issues,” said President Mikheil Kavelashvili at the Sameba (Holy Trinity) Cathedral. Mikheil Kavelashvili congratulated Georgia, the Georgian people, Georgian immigrants, locals residing across the occupied regions and Abkhazians and Ossetians on Christmas. “Patriarch’s Epistle is always noteworthy since it reflects facing challenges and reality. This is love for mankind. Our society will agree that we should love each other with God’s love, our society should unite and we should defeat these artificially imported polarization issues with love. This is the message from the Patriarch’s Christmas Epistle. I as the President will prove this with my activities and try my best to unite society with love,” he said.

PM: We should counter love to hatred

“Christmas Epistle focuses on the significance of faith and love for God and mankind. Love is what society lacks,” said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze following the festive Christmas liturgy held at the Sameba (Holy Trinity) Cathedral. According to the PM, some forces attempt to artificially sow hatred instead of love in society. “We should counter love to hatred and this is what the Christmas Epistle is about. The Patriarch’s Epistles are dedicated to the reality our country lives in and the same happened today. A human who is distanced from God and faith – this is one of the key challenges of the modern world and one of the main problems. There is an ideology that spreads throughout Georgia, and it is this ideology that separates people from God and from faith. Of course, we all have to confront this, and for that we need to protect our faith, protect our traditional values. We should be busy with that. In general, the modern world faces serious challenges. These challenges are linked to concrete political ideological trends and we have to fight with that,” he told reporters.

Patriarch’s Christmas Epistle: Only a human is created in likeness of God

“Only a human is created in the image and likeness of God – intelligent, eloquent, endowed with goodness, free will, and the capacity for divine love, ready to learn the truth and serve it,” reads the Christmas Epistle of Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II. According to the Georgian Patriarch, humans should love humankind and abandon selfishness. “Fear of death is characteristic of a degraded individual. That is why an individual sought ways to prolong life, inventing different methods and creating an illusion of prosperity, but all in vain. This all becomes the reason for bigger mistakes and deepens the already existing spiritual crisis. Such an individual cannot acknowledge that the fear of death is caused by sins. The soul enslaved by sin unconsciously fears meeting with God and therefore trembles. However, instead of distancing from immorality and purifying the soul, he often falls into nihilism and takes refuge in atheism (although there are many other reasons for disbelief). For such individuals, life is a period from birth to death and everything ends for him with death. That is why they believe that evil, goodness, hypocrisy, faithfulness, envy, love, immorality… are ordinary feelings and they do not feel any responsibility before a specific person or God because they do not believe in heavenly life or have faith in eternal values,” reads the Epistle.
