“The European Broadcasting Union strongly condemns the violence and physical attacks against journalists covering the demonstrations in Georgia.
Dozens of journalists and media workers have been physically attacked by Special Forces during the protests, including Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) employee Davit Bejanishvili who was injured during a protest in Tbilisi.
Furthermore, we are troubled by the attempted forced entry of demonstrators into the offices of the GPB this weekend.
All acts of violence or intimidation against members of the press are entirely unacceptable.
Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of any democratic society. The EBU calls on all stakeholders to uphold this fundamental right and ensure that journalists can work freely and safely in Georgia while covering the ongoing protests,” the EBU stated.
