Shalva Papuashvili, Georgian Parliament Speaker and a member of the Georgian Dream political council spoke at a pre-election meeting in Adjara, western Georgia on Thursday.
The Speaker stated, “Constant wars and destruction since [gaining] independence seemed to have become our fate, which suddenly fell on us Georgians. And as if the only thing we could do was accept this fate.”
“However,” According to the speaker, “the last 12 years have shown us that it’s not about destiny, but about who controls your destiny.”
“We observed that when the government acts in the interests of the Georgian people rather than outsiders, the Georgian people retain control of their own fate. That is why the 12-year period of uninterrupted peace is not a coincidence or a mercy of fate, but the outcome of the Georgian people’s ability to control their destiny. We took it in our hands.
Consider what our country and people would be like if we followed the logic of the previous government and today’s opposition. What would we face if we followed the footsteps of our opponents, imposed bilateral economic sanctions and embargoes on Russia, closed our borders, and blocked air and land traffic?
This demand is now heard from the European Parliament’s tribune as an ultimatum, blackmail, and threat. If it was previously denied and blamed on our imagination that someone urged that we put sanctions on Russia, this resolution made public the pressures that our administration was under throughout this period,” the Speaker asserted.
