The Ministry of Culture of Georgia has announced the successful completion of the integrated temporary roofing works on the main temple of the Gelati Monastery Complex.
According to the Ministry, these roofing works were carried out by the Gelati Rehabilitation Temporary Committee in strict accordance with the recommendations of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre.
“The entire rehabilitation process, including the installation of the single temporary roofing structure, enjoys strong and active support from the Government of Georgia and the Ministry of Culture,” the statement reads.
Georgia’s Minister of Culture, Tinatin Rukhadze, accompanied by her deputies Beka Davituliani and Giorgi Mirtskhulava, as well as Archimandrite Kirion Oniani, Deputy Chairman of the Gelati Temporary Rehabilitation Committee, observed the roofing process of the dome of the Gelati Main Cathedral. The Minister also familiarised herself with the ongoing work on-site and engaged in discussions with the conservation team responsible for the cathedral’s painted surfaces. The parties highlighted that the collaborative efforts of the state, the church, and scientific experts have yielded significant progress.
The project has adhered to UNESCO World Heritage protection principles, ensuring the irreversible enhancement of the monument’s conservation status. Minister Rukhadze expressed her gratitude to the Gelati Temporary Rehabilitation Committee and all workers involved in the project, praising their dedication and expertise.
In a statement, the Georgian Ministry of Culture highlighted the contribution of Georgian specialists in wall painting conservation, underscoring the national commitment to preserving this invaluable cultural heritage.
